Smellscape

As humans we move our way through urban environments as sensory beings, gaining knowledge partly through the involuntary sense of olfaction. (Kate Mclean, 2014)

This diagram shows a route taken through the area and expresses the various different scents recorded along the walk – most which may not have been noticed consciously if it hadn’t been for the purpose of the exercise!

Some smells in particular reoccur often (fumes from vehicles, foliage and sawn timber), and others only once or twice, reflecting recent activities such a pedestrian smoking a cigarette, and the aroma of shampoo outside the doorway to a hair salon.
